Here’s a quickie for anyone who has never used a sewing machine before and wants some practice. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 2 and a half, & 3!

1.) Print out two copies of the picture above.

2.) Remove the spool thread and the bobbin from the sewing machine.

2.5) Choose a sewing machine needle to use ONLY for paper, and put it in the machine if it isn’t there already. Don’t use this needle for fabric because the paper dulls the needle, making it work badly with anything other than paper.

3.) Using a straight stitch, sew along the line so the needle punches holes on top of the line. This will help you learn to control the speed of the foot petal as well as learning to guide your fabric into the machine. Going slower is better than fast, and don’t forget that you can stop, have the needle down all the way into the paper and lift the sewing foot to turn around corners or to help you get back on track. Once you have done this on the first printout, do it again on the second but go in the opposite direction.

In no time you will feel confidant in moving on to fabric, but don’t forget to switch the needle and thread the machine!
